The first musician to receive the Padma Bhushan was MS Subbulakshmi. She received the Padma Bhusan in the year 1954 and Padma Vibhushan in 1975. She was also the first musician to receive the Ramon Magsaysay Award for Public service in 1974. In 1988 she was conferred the Bharat Ratna.
